Half Day Bird Watching Tour In Caño Negro
|

|
Departing la Fortuna at 5:00am, we will begin our 100 km journey towards Los Chiles, just a 10 minute boat ride from the Costa Rica /Nicaragua border. Here we will board a motorized boat, with an experienced local pilot to begin bird watching.
We will navigate along Río Frío, the river that goes through the Caño Negro wildlife refuge. The region of Caño Negro is an excellent place to observe aquatic birds as well as birds that inhabit the tropical rainforest and the tropical dry forests, due to its privileged location. |
Common sightings include: Anhinga(Anhinga anhinga), Great Egret (Ardea alba), Neotropic Cormorant(Phalachrocorax brasilianus), Pasarinii’s tanager(ramphocelus passerinii), Amazon kingfisher(Chloroceryle amazona), Green Heron (Butorides virescens), Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), in addition to migratory birds seen between mid-September and the end of May, such as: Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), Little Blue Heron(Egretta caerulea), Spotted Sandpiper (actitis macularius), Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula), Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra). There are also several species in the region of Caño Negro which are very attractive, but harder to spot due to their excellent camaflogue. Among these: Great Potoo(Nyctibius grandis), Common Potoo(Nyctibius griseus), Lesser Nighthawk(Chordeiles acutipennis), and other which are rare or in danger of extinction like the large stork, (Jabiru mycteria), the Agami Heron (Agamia agami), Green and Rufous Kingfisher(Chloroceryle inda), American Pygmy-kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea) the second smallest kingfisher in the world, Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture(Cathartes burrovianus), and the American Finfoot(Heliornis fulica) which has a bag under its wings, where the male can hide its young when in danger and swim to safety!
Duration: We leave Fortuna at 5:00am to arrive at Los Chiles by 6:30am. We will navigate the river for around 4 hours, with a short 30 minute break for coffee and sandwiches. At 10:30am we will begin our return to La Fortuna, to be back by around noon.
