Ecocentro Danaus Bird Watching Tour

 

 

We depart from the hotel towards Ecocentro Danaus at 5:15 am. In just 10 minutes we will arrive at this interesting sanct5uary of just 3 hectares, which combines tropical gardens with a recovering forest and a man-made lake where it is possible to observe a large colony of nocturnal heron known as Chocuaco (Cochlearius cochlearius), found here year-round and known as the permanent home of this species throughout Costa Rica. Other species of fauna are easily spotted as well, such as caiman, agouti, and sloths.  There is also a beautiful butterfly garden on the property.

In addition to the  nocturnal heron, it is common to observe Passerini’s tanagers ( Ramphocelus passerinii ) , Blue –grey tanager (Thraupis episcopus) , Green-backed Heron (Butorides virescens ),  Rufous-tailed hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl ), Grey necked wood rail (Aramides cajanea ), Grey headed Chachalaca ( Ortalis cinereiceps ), and the White tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) .

Other possible sightings include:  Fiery Billed Aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii) , Rufous Motmot          (Baryphthengus martii ), Chestnut Mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos  sulfuratus ), Green hermit (Phaethornis  loguemareus) , Squirrel Cuckoo ( Piaya cayana), Rufous tailed jacamar (Galbula ruficauda), White collared Manakin (Manacus candei), a species which perform mating rituals, in which the male does a dance to attract the female, hopping from side to side produce sound with its wings and tail, resembling the breaking of a branch.

Rarer sightings on this property include: Agami Heron (Agamia agami) , Blue winged Warbler           (Vermivora pinus), Green Honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza) , Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus), Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata) , Olivaceous Picule (Picumnus olivaceuos), Slety-tailed trogon (Trogon massena), Purple Crowned Fairy (Heliothryx barroti )  Bronzy Hermit (Glaucis  aenea) , Aztec parakeet (Aratinga nana) and the White-crowned parrot (Pionus senilis), among others.
Duration:  4 hours trail time, from 5:30am to 9:30am, including a 30 minute coffee break.
