El Silencio Biological Reserve Bird Watching Tour

This tour begins with hotel pick ups at 5:15 am, in order to arrive at the Reserve at 5:30 am and begin the tour in an open area of grasslands and regenerated forest, before entering one of the rainforest trails renowned as one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet. Though it comprises 3% of the land mass of the planet, it is home of 50% of the species found throughout the world, making it a great place for bird watching.
Frequently spotted species include: Grey-headed Chachalaca (Ortalis cinereiceps), Eastern Wood Pewee (Contopus virens), Keel billed Toucan (ramphastos sulfuratus), Cinnamon Becard (Pachyramphus cinnamomeus), Carimoli Tanager (Chlorothraupis carmioli), Wedge-billed Woodcreeper (Glyphorhynchus spirurus), Stripe breasted Wren (Thryothorus thoracicus) and Montezuma Oropendola (Psarocolius montezuma). |
Other less common species are: Keel-billed Motmot (Electron carinatum), Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer (Chalybura urochrysia), Whitefronted Nunbird (Monasa morphoeus) which is named for its feather’s colors, similar to a nun´s habit,White hawk (Leucopternis albicolis), Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida), Golden hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata), Bay headed Tanager (Tangara gyrola), Yellow Margined Flycatcher (Talmomyias assimilis) and Blackheaded Nightengale Thrush (Catharus mexicanus).
Even rarer species have been sighted here, such as: Ornate Hawk-eagle (Spizaetus ornatus), King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), Collared Forest Falcon (Micrastur semitorquatus), Great Potoo (Nictibius grandis), Ocelatted Antbird (Phaenostictus mcleannani) and Speckled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata) named for its eyebrows and whiskers which look like eyeglasses. This nocturnal hunting bird is large enough to eat animals as large as possums.
Duration: 4 hours, from5:30am to 9:30pm, with a 20 minute break for coffee, juice, and sandwiches.
