Bird Watching Tour on the Peninsula Trail

Out tour will begin at 6 am from the trail entrance, located within the Arenal Volcano National Park, with the great advantage of being a less travelled trail, making it ideal for bird watching. The trail is a combination of Tropical Rainforest in regeneration and open pastures, located near the Arenal Volcano.
We will walk along the trails observing a variety of birds during 2 hours, where it is common to spot: Olive Sparrow (Arremonops rufivirgatus), Variable Seedeater (Sporophila aurita), Olive Tanager (Chlorothraupis carmioli), Buff-romped Warbler (Phaeothlypis fulvicauda), and between September and May you can frequently see migratory species like: Chestnut-sided Warbler (Dendroica pensylvanica), Spotted-breasted Oriole (Icterus dominicensis), Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus), and Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra).
Along the trails you may also find less common very attractive birds including: Violaceous Trogon (Trogon violaceus), Rufous-tailed Jacamar (Galbula ruficauda) a lovely bird that feeds on insects which it catches in the air with its majestic quick movements, Long-tailed Tyrant (Colonia colonus), White fronted Nunbird (Monasa morphoeus) named for the color of its feathers, similar to a monk’s habit.
After walking for 2 hours observing these magnificent species we will take a coffee break at the look-out point, where if conditions permit, we will have an excellent view of the Arenal Volcano as well as the Arenal Lake.
After this break we will go down to the lake to take a 45 minute motorized boat ride along the lake’s edge in search of aquatic species like: Neotropica Comorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus), Ringed Kingfisher (Ceryle torquata), and Great Egret (Ardea alba) and with luck we will spot less common species such as: Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis), Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis), or American Coot (Fulica america).
Duration: 4 hours, leaving the hotel at 5:30 am to arrive at the trail at 6:00 am, with a coffee break at 8:00 am, and finally a short boat tour of Lake Arenal before returning to the hotel at 9:30 am.
