Children's Eternal Rainforest - Overnight

The tour departs La Fortuna at 7:00am, for a 25 minute drive along paved roads, followed by about 45 minutes on a gravel road decorated with panoramic views.

Once we arrive, we will settle in at the Pocosol Station Lodge, and then take a hike along one of the two forest trails to search for birds and animals.

The Children´s Rainforest started as a small movement among children and their parents in Sweden and the USA in 1987. Today, it is Costa Rica’s largest private reserve, and one of the most important in Latin-America. Currently, the children and adults in 44 countries have contributed to the protection of this rainforest. The reserve has more than 20,000 hectares of protected forest; primarily tropical rainforests and cloud forests.

At the Pocosol Station, we will ne in the tropical rainforest. The station is 720 meters above sea level, with 10 kilometers of trails. The most common species sighted are: The Montezuma Oropendola   (Psarocolius montezuma), which nest in the Reserve. Their nests are similar to a hanging sack of more than a meter in size. The Oropendola is a gregarious bird, which often nests in large colonies.  In one tree near the small lake of the Children´s Eternal Rainforest more tan 40 nests have been counted. Other common species include: Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi), Passerinii´s Tanager (Ramphocelus passerinii), Rufous-tailed hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl); in addition to other less common species, that you can observe with patience and a bit of luck like:   Ocelated Antbird (Phaenostictus  macleannani), Bare-necked Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus glabricolis), Black-crested Coquette (Lophornis helenae), Speckled Tanager (Tangara muttata), and Solitary Eagle (Harpyhaliaetus solitarius).

After 2 and half hours of morning bird watching we will have lunch at the lodge and rest to regain energy, before another hike at 4:00pm to continue bird watching.

In the evening we will have dinner at the lodge and then enjoy an optional short night hike to spot nocturnal birds, and other animal species.

The following day, we will awake early to observe birds at sunrise, among the open areas and the forests, combining forested areas with disturbed areas. After 3 hours of bird watching, we will return to the lodge for breakfast before returning to La Fortuna, around 11 am.
