The tour departs from La Fortuna at 2:00 pm, for the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge; founded in 1984 in order to protect the wetlands and wildlife of the region.  Once in the Refuge, we will take a boat ride along Río Frío in search of bird species – both aquatic birds and those found in the surrounding forest and farmlands.

Common sightings include: Anhinga(Anhinga anhinga), Great Egret (Ardea alba), Neotropic Cormorant (Phalachrocorax brasilianus), Pasarinii’s tanager(ramphocelus passerinii), Amazon kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona), Green Heron (Butorides virescens), Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), in addition to migratory birds seen between mid-September and the end of May, such as: Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), Little Blue Heron(Egretta caerulea), Spotted Sandpiper (actitis macularius), Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula), Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra). There are also several species in the region of Caño Negro which are very attractive, but harder to spot due to their excellent camouflage.
